Spectrum Wireless, Inc. Teams with McGrathAlaska.Net -- McGrath Light & Power -- To Provide Broadband Wireless to Rural Locations in Alaska

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 19, 2001--Spectrum Wireless, Inc., a leading provider of broadband fixed wireless router equipment, today announced that it has teamed with McGrathAlaska.Net in order to deliver broadband wireless services to various rural locations in Alaska.

The collaboration allows Spectrum Wireless, in conjunction with McGrathAlaska.Net, to provide broadband services to remote locations in Alaska previously not served due to lack of wire line infrastructure. McGrathAlaska.Net, which operates an ISP, delivers service via a satellite connection. Service is then delivered across LANs with Spectrum's wireless IP router equipment. Previously, McGrathAlaska.Net was operating at 4800 and 9600 baud. Since the implementation of Spectrum Wireless' solution, McGrathAlaska.Net has realized several significant results: long distance charges have been reduced; customers are charged less for service; and customers now have an always-on connection with the same speed as would be seen in an urban city.

"McGrathAlaska.Net serves customers who are remotely located. Our partnership with Spectrum Wireless has given us the ability and confidence to provide a service urban consumers would gladly choose," said Ernie Baumgartner, General Manager of McGrathAlaska.Net and McGrath Light & Power. "Even with the high cost of satellite bandwidth and small population (420), we are showing an $8,000.00 net profit for the first nine months of our second year."

"Spectrum Wireless is very pleased to work with McGrathAlaska.Net as it offers wireless broadband applications to customers who have long since been underserved. Additionally, this gives Spectrum Wireless proof of concept of the viability of Spectrum's technology, particularly in solving the last mile conundrum," said Dan Ferguson, Spectrum Wireless' Co-Founder and Director of Research and Development. "We truly look forward to a long term and diverse relationship with McGrathAlaska.Net."
